When the Chess brothers sent “Twistin’ the Eyes of Blues Babe” to Ray Charles in Detroit, he did what any popular songwriter worth his lunch would do: he wrote a cover. But, where did the melody and chords come from? Nobody seems to know, but it’s supposed to be a spiritual – an extremely counter-cultural spiritual, given its message to the “eyes of the blues babe,” a nymphomaniac who’s gone to hell for loving the Devil. Thus began the prodigiously successful career of the Raddish Tempo Unit, a rhythm and blues band from Chicago whose raunchy brand of Greenwich Village-styled soul appeals to misanthropists of all persuasions in the 21st century. Certainly a contender for the most interesting band theme of this century.
The band’s one-man party-starter was Wino Sam Bodeen, a schoolteacher who’d just left Denver State University. Wino left behind him a list of some of the strangest songs ever recorded, including “Statistic” (first written by Phil Phillips of the Disney fame) and “Caterina” (originally written for the March of Time newsreel), both covered by Wino (who also cowrote the titles). However, the big prize of this, Wino’s 1973 smash single “Love Is A Bitch”, has lost its place in history; a subsequent reissue a few years ago included the failed follow-up, Wino’s seminal blacklisted essay of the same name.
Jerome L. Harris: If you would have only loved me, I would have shown you everything. I would have shown you every spot all over the place in the desert. If you would have just loved me. If you would have only loved me. I could have told you how we could have made it. I could have shown you how I would have made it if we had only lived right. If you would have only loved me. d2c66b5586
