The chair of state, commodified like royalty, was coveredwith an elegant cloth-of-gold, and at the corners wereembellished with lace and ribbons cut in the richesttapestry then manufactured. On the chair was an elaboratelyglittering plate, the very counterpart of the estate plate of theexplorations, from which it was taken; and scattered on themen at the table were silver goblets, cups, saucers, etc. Plates of gold, the same as those on the state chair, linemed to be put on to accommodate the company, and they werehospitable and liberal. After the meal was over, the ladieswent to the drawing room, where the tea table was furnished withamong other dainties, a bowl of cream whipped and decoratedwith many-coloured candied flowers. The ladies found threedots of sugar from the sugar tongs on their plates, for 10the gentlemen added some drops of a milky mixture takenfrom the tops of the boiled teas, supposed to be much morecathartic> in its effects than any other thing to be obtainedfrom the garden, the plantation, or the fishery. 20After tea, and while they were playing cards, the gentlemenjoined the ladies in their conversation, and then playedcribbage with each other, as they were doing now. d2c66b5586
